About the material
Stone Stairs and Treads
External stairs are the one place on a project where the choice of stone is directly a safety question. A polished surface is dangerous in rain or frost, however good it looks.
So we use two finishes for stairs: antislip basalt, where a mechanically worked fine relief keeps water from sitting on the surface, and unpolished granite, whose even grain holds dry friction.
We cut a drip groove into the nosing — it stops water running down the riser and reduces ice forming along the edge in winter. Sets are cut from a single block so every tread sits in the same tone.
