That structure resists scratching, abrasion and acid rain, and it is why a polished granite step in a busy entrance still reflects light years after it was laid. Where basalt is chosen for grip and weather, granite is chosen for hardness and finish.
One reflects, one absorbs. The choice is usually decided by where water and feet go, not by taste alone.
